RUSAL Bogoslovsky Smelter’s Criminal Suit Directed to Court
A criminal suit relating to death of a number of workers who did some repairs at UC RUSAL Bogoslovsky smelter was recently directed to court.
The spokesperson for Sverdlovsk Region public prosecution authorities has already reported earlier on how the criminal proceedings were progressing; the lawsuit in question had to do with violation of labor safety regulations that led to the death of two workers; the victims had been contracted to do some jobs at UC RUSAL Bogoslovsky smelter in Krasnoturyinsk.
It was detected that on June 9, 2011, a cable hoist used for lifting some slates collapsed during the repairs of the roof at one of Bogoslovsky subsidiary’s premises; as a result, two workers (citizens of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, born in 1974 and 1976, respectively) were killed. The victims fell from a twenty-five-meter height and got lethal injuries.
The public prosecutor of Krasnoturyinsk confirmed the bill of indictment and directed the criminal suit to court; the suit involves the sole trader who signed contracts with the said workers but did not provide them with the necessary devices needed for safe steeplejack-type operations. The charges are based on Article 143 (part 2) of the Russian Federation Criminal Code (violation of labor safety regulations resulting in involuntary manslaughter).
