Head of Federal Atomic Power Agency Sergey Kirienko demands that Mayak management completes fortification of Techenskiy tandem reservoir system dam in 2007

Within the next few years, the dam of Techenskiy tandem reservoir system is to be fortified, Head of Federal Atomic Power Agency Sergey Kirienko said in the course of a meeting with the executives of Mayak Production Association. As the company’s spokesperson said to UrBC representative, Mr Kirienko took a helicopter flight around the dam and asked detailed questions about the scientific, explorative, and construction aspects of the fortification process. Even though he was generally satisfied with the way things were being handled, Mr Kirienko still demanded that Mayak speed up in order to finish everything by the end of the next year and bring the dam in full compliance with the safety regulations. He dubbed the dam ‘the most thoroughly researched construction in Russia to date’.

Now the company employees are working on the terminal dam of the tandem reservoir system and scientific research into the possibility of purifying the water from the radiological effluent will begin soon. Mayak management also hopes to provide for minimization of the amount of water-borne wastes that get into the River Techa with the help of special clearing facilities, for example, the combined sewerage system that will help transfer the subterranean waters not needed in the reservoirs. This will prevent the system from overflowing and infecting the drainage with polluted water.
