Metallurgical Industrial Complex of Nizhny Tagil JSC (NTMK JSC), member of Evraz Group, has prepared a set of investments projects that meet the Kyoto Protocol requirements. According to the company’s PR-department, the projects concern the principles of NTMK converter plant reconstruction and optimization of plant engineering operations, especially those dealing with the company’s heat power plant and the gas-distributing station. The preparation of the projects was performed by a special working team compiled following the CEO’s order. The group consisted of key production sectors representatives, economists and ecologists. The main results of the preparation works include calculation of the expected efficiency of the scheduled environmental projects and correction of the company’s energy management development program. The scheduled environmental measures are to allow NTMK to reduce its greenhouse gases emission, especially that of СО2, down to 1m tons.

If the projects happen to be appropriately ratified, the company will get more chances to not only meliorate the local environment but also to participate in the future sales of Russian greenhouse gases emission quotas.

The Kyoto Protocol was signed as a supplement to the UNO framework convention on the climate fluctuation in Japan, Kyoto prefecture, in 1997. According to the document, the member countries (more than 100 in number) assume obligations to restrict deleterious effect of their industries on the Earth's atmosphere (by cutting emissions) by 2008. Russia acceded to the Kyoto Protocol in the end of 2004.
