Nizhniy Tagil Iron & Steel Works’ steelmaking unit to undergo reconstruction

Nizhniy Tagil Iron & Steel Works (member of Evraz Group) keeps working on its four-year oxygen converter upgrading project, the spokesperson for Evraz Group said to UrBC. The shop’s steelmaking converter has been shut down for the time being, as the unit is to undergo some thorough reconstruction. Everything is to be completed within seventy-five days, with 1,500 experts and workers taking part in the process. In the meantime, the shop itself will keep operating as usual.

The better part of the new machinery has already been delivered, and the company’s workers have assembled the main units and mechanisms as well. Before the end of April, a new induced-draft fan is expected to arrive from Chudovo, Novgorod Region; this fan is one of the future converter’s most important environmental devices, as its perfect aspiration system is to cut down on the amount of dust and gas emissions by 2.5 times. The converter will probably be launched in the first half of June; its capacity is expected to rise by 30% which means the amount of melting operations can reach 80 a day.

The new converter is to become the shop’s second upgraded steelmaking unit out of the four operating units. The first one was fully reconstructed and launched in November 2007; it still has to be fitted with a number of new devices that will make the slag and impurities filtering process fully automatic. The second converter is to employ all the new technologies as well; in addition, it will be fitted with visualization and diagnostics devices, an electronic data archive, and advanced power mechanisms.

Evraz Group’s spokesperson says Nizhniy Tagil Iron & Steel Works is to fully upgrade another converter in September. The contract the enterprise signed with the Austrian Siemens-Voest-Alpine provides for full replacement of all the four converters and power and environmental devices. After the project has been completed, the company’s steel-smelting output is to rise from 3.5 million tons to 4.2 million tons a year.

In addition to this, the enterprise is also working on the design of some new steelmaking facilities.
