MMK re-launches Mill 2500

Hot-rolling Mill 2500 was re-launched at Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works’ (MMK) sheet rolling plant a short while ago. A little earlier, the company had to stop using the mill for the time being because of the dropping hot roll products’ output. The enterprise only relied on the adjustage for some time, that is, two crosscutting units were used for sheet production. What MMK was mainly interested in was keeping the staff employed, so over two hundred workers were directed to Mill 500 construction site, and some of the employees underwent internship at the hot-rolling Mill 2000 shop. The rest of the personnel were involved in tending the shop and repairing the malfunctioning mechanisms.

According to MMK’ PR Department, the need for the increased metal goods output has meant that the mill had to be re-launched once again soon. The shop’s workers and the technical maintenance and the power sector experts managed to prepare the machine for the re-launch as soon as possible. So, this February, the mill is expected to produce about 220,000 tons of hot-rolled sheet products, which is only a little less than the ante-crisis level of 300,000 to 350,000 tons of goods a month. Five of the shop’s six baking furnaces are being used at the moment, with the sixth one to be commissioned at the end of the month. Once the sixth furnace becomes available, the shop’s production output is going to rise even more impressively.

‘MMK had its hot-rolling Mill 2500 launched in 1960. The equipment was then delivered by Kramatorskiy Machine-Building Plant. Last year, the mill’s production output reached 3 million tons of hot-rolled sheet products. In the summer of 2007, we signed a contract with Novokuznetsk Metallurgical Plant (NKMZ) regarding the delivery of some more machinery needed for the mill’s reconstruction, so as a result, the mill’s capacity is to reach 5 million tons a year; what is more, we’ll be able to manufacture sheet and rolled products for ship- and bridge-building industries as well as for the producers of boiling equipment. Besides, the mill will be capable of producing a wider range of products, including cold-rolled goods and coated sheets,’ MMK’s PR Department reports.
