MMK invests 1.2bn in conservation
Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) looked into the results of its environmental management system’s performance in the first half of 2009. This system was actually certified for compliance with the international ISO 14001: 2004 standards.
According to MMK’s PR Department, the enterprise managed to reduce its gross emission rates by 9.4% against the first half of 2008. Then, the company’s filtering and recycling facilities processed 3.2 million tons of metallurgical slag into 222,000 tons of metal. What is more, MMK reused 760,000 tons of waste for sintering mix and directed over 3 million tons of slag to restore the coffins at Mount Magnitnaya.
All in all, the enterprise invested 1.228 billion RUR in various conservation projects in the first half of the year, including some 646 million RUR allocated for filtering facilities construction.
