Flight delay frustrates 98 people

OAO Koltsovo Airport, Yekaterinburg, informed the public of the reasons Flydubai’s Dubai-Yekaterinburg flight had been delayed.

Flydubai’s Boeing737 operating the flight from Dubai to Yekaterinburg on November 20, 2010 landed in Koltsovo more than twenty-four hours later than had been planned. The airplane’s crew decided to land in its ‘Plan B’ airport in Samara because the landing strip in Koltsovo did not seem to provide the friction that would be safe enough to perform the landing. After the landing, the crew took some rest in accordance with the existing flight safety requirements and the number of hours spent working. As a result, the plane finally arrived in Yekaterinburg at 10:35 PM on November 21, 2010 instead of 3:10 PM a day earlier.

‘On November 20, the runway was fit for both the take-off and landing of aircraft despite the cold weather and snow; the friction coefficient came to 0.3, which means airplanes could land on the runway as usual. For example, three planes (including А320 and Boeing757) landed and eight planes (including А320, А319, ATR43, Boeing737, Boeing757, and SRG200) took off in Koltsovo Airport between 1:30 PM and 6:30 PM on November 20, 2010,’ the airport’s press service reports.

The airport says their maintenance division starts using special chemicals to prevent the buildup of black ice and frost on the landing strip as soon as the cold weather sets in; what is more, snow-sweeping vehicles are used during snowfalls. All this provides the friction coefficient necessary for the take-off and landing of airplanes in winter.

123 passengers arrived in Yekaterinburg via the delayed flight; 98 people had been waiting at Koltsovo Airport for the flight’s departure to Dubai.
