Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) now has a long-term Environmental Program for 2008-2015 that provides for the use of the best existing conservation technologies in all of its divisions. The investments in the fulfillment of the Program will come to more than 14 billion RUR over the next seven years.

The program came into force on January 1, 2008 after the corresponding decision has been taken by the company’s Board of Directors. The program confirms the enterprise’s basic conservational strategies and provides for compliance with the environmental regulations. Within the framework of the program, Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works is going to implement a number of restoration and modernization projects on its premises, which will lead to a decrease in the amount of harmful emissions, enhancing the production efficiency and putting up filtering and protecting facilities in all of the production divisions. The blast-furnace department, for example, will receive more than 4.5 billion RUR worth of investments, the ore mining and processing department will get about 1.5 billion RUR, and the chief power engineering department will get more than 1 billion RUR.

Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works pays great attention to the environmental issues, and some of its projects have already led to the amount of harmful emissions decreasing by three times compared to 1991, MMK’s press officer reports.
